Once I’d joined Flying Kiwi in Oamaru and pitched our tents, we headed back into Oamaru to see some penguins – Yellow-eyed and Blue. The Yellow-eyed ones, well, there was only one who was very happy to pose for the camera. The Blue penguins on the other hand we weren’t allowed to photograph. These come in as night falls as rafts where they’re then at the mercy of the waves crashing on the shore. At only 40cm high they struggle up the rocky shore to an old quarry which has had some TLC and been converted into an artificial nesting site for these penguins. The most comic moment was when a group of these penguins were stopped in their tracks by a rabbit oblivious to the effect it was having on these birds. The penguins seemed very unsure of what to do before taking a very large detour round the rabbit and then racing to their burrows where there were some very hungry and very vocal fledglings waiting.
